THE IMPORTANCE OF MEASURING HAPPINESS
In Latin America there are approximately 650 million of people working, but
In Latin America there are approximately 650 million of people working, but not everyone has the same conditions, salary, benefits or even do what they really like.
According a study of OECD, Mexico it’s the first place of working hours per day with 8.67 hours, among Costa Rica and Chile, that is 2,246 hours per year, that added up with the fact that in Latin America there are fewer social benefits like days of vacations, give us that Mexico it´s the less productive country of the OECD.
It´s proved that this problem doesn´t depend just on the worker, factors as working environment, lack of resources or toxic people act as main ingredients of lack of productivity caused by work stress. The IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) puts Mexico as one of the five worst countries to work on according to its statistics, this makes sense with the fact that 85 % of organizations in Mexico have toxic work environment.
AND ¿HOW THE MEASUREMENT OF HAPPINESS CAN HELP IN THIS?
First of all, you have to be convinced that the well-being of your people has to be your company number one priority, if you are not convinced of that, not even to know that happy employees are twice productive, have 65% more energy and that the engagement with the business is twice higher than the less happy people could help (according to the iOpener Institute de Oxford).
Now, let´s go into business, we are living on a game changing era, and we need to take advantage of the technologies, mindset and expertise of different people, measure is not only to make surveys once a year, this is the kind of efforts (among others) that are out there:
· Hedonometer: hedonometer.org created an instrument that measures the happiness of large populations in real time.
· iOpener Institute for people & performance: An extensive, rigorous and robust research program into The Science of Happiness at Work ™
· Measure your well-being: A tool of INEGI (Mexican Institute) that measures subjective well-being
· EmotionSense : App developed by Cambridge University that assess how people’s emotions are influenced by factors such as their surroundings, the time of day, or their relationships with others.
You can identify the main reason why your team productivity is low or why the profits are going down, some businesses have related specific actions on happiness and motivation with the increase of the EBITDA and the employee retention rate, others uses an app to interact and measure happiness daily so that they can analyse issues such as sense of belonging, camaraderie or levels of psychosocial risks.
There is a big community out there who are trying their best so that the decision makers realize that to turn and look into people’s well-being, and do actions about it, is the best way to make their business grow.
At Horizones Consulting we are working on a high impact project with Bé, that can measure happiness in companies, governments, and schools and can link specific kpi’s with people well-being in order to move the leavers that can trigger growth for organizations and mainly for people life.
Let’s rethink how the things are done and work together to create value for the world.
